Where the Everglades begin…

Located within the northernmost part of the legendary Florida Everglades, Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee NWR is the only surviving remnant of the northern Everglades. The 146,000-acre refuge consists mostly of the sawgrass marsh that is so characteristic of the Everglades environment and is one of the few places where lucky observers might see the endangered snail kite searching for food

We will meet inside the park in front of the visitor center at 10:00 am. We will be given a guided walking tour of the 0.8-mile Sawgrass Marsh Trail and Observation Tower looking for herons, egrets, ibis, limpkins, coots, anhinga’s, vultures, ospreys, hawks, ducks and alligators. We will then return to the visitors center for a short restroom & sustenance break (bring your own drinks & snacks – there is no food for sale at this park, you may also want to bring a folding chair!). After our break we will take a 0.4 mile walk on the Cypress Swamp Boardwalk through a lush area of cypress trees, ferns, and air plants. Listen for woodpeckers and look for basking snakes, turtles & lizards. We will also be able to spend some time viewing the exhibits in the visitor center. Don’t forget your camera, binoculars, bug repellant and sunscreen.
